MPD Steak Kitchen
Introducing MPD Steak Kitchen - bringing fine dining, an incredible menu and a moody city dining experience to the South Eastern suburbs. I can't wait to go back!
As a lover of steak and fine dining I couldn't wait to check out new restaurant MPD Steak Kitchen in Berwick which is receiving rave reviews, and I can see why! Boasting a serious steak offering – MPD Steak Kitchen, opened in June this year with the former nightclub site now transformed into a 200-seater restaurant and bar, led by former Vue Group executive chef Chis Bonello.
Not only was I excited to get stuck into the menu it was the interior fit out and design I couldn't wait to see. The MPD build and design, costing in excess of $3 million, was a vsion of owners Rob and Victor Zagame and literally blew my mind from the moment you enter the doors. The brief for the two level space was to create a customer journey from start to finish, giving a sensory overload of touch, smell and sight. It’s moody and eclectic. After entering through the narrow hallway – a sensory experience which feels like you’re walking through a grill – guests encounter the dining space, and note tones of charcoal, contrasting light and dark woods, offset by white and red neon, copper finishes, leather booths, cow hides, over 50 different light fittings, blue leather bar front, and quirky sculptures and wall features. A chef’s table seating up to 10 people serves Bonello’s dishes on bespoke crockery by local ceramic artist and sculptor Andrei Davidoff. The mood in the main dining room is intimate with low lighting and caramel leather booths, creating a cosy sense of being in your own private dining room.
Guests have a bird’s-eye view of the main restaurant floor from the second level mezzanine, which also doubles as a private dining area. From the bar, MPD venue manager Marcus Fabian says guests can expect “an extensive selection of quality bourbon and scotch, plus a focus on local craft beers and ciders like Grand Ridge Brewery from Mirboo North, and O’Brien Gluten Free Pale Ale from Ballarat. “The cocktail list is adventurous, incorporating liquid nitrogen on tap, something rarely seen in Melbourne,” Fabian says.
The menu is steak focused, offering a selection of regular, to the more unusual cuts of beef. Bonello sourced a majority of the beef locally from suppliers like O’Connor Beed and Vic’s Premium Quality Meat and also brought in David Blackmore Wagyu and Cape Grim. Lamb (Flinders Island), fish, poultry and pork offerings are on the menu. Paired with a 250-strong wine list which favors local Victorian and Australian wines, plus Argentinians, French, Italian and Spanish varietals.
The bar offers adventurous cocktails, incorporating liquid nitrogen on tap. I'm going back for the Espresso Martini! MPD is well worth a trip for a dining experience like no other!
